Antoine Ducoux, « Le passé dans le futur : variations spectrales dans L’Invention de Morel d’Adolfo Bioy Casares et Chroniques martiennes de Ray Bradbury » (n° 3 | 2024)

Mon­u­ments lit­téraires du genre sci­ence-fic­tion­nel, L’Invention de Morel (1940) et les Chroniques mar­ti­ennes (1950) actu­alisent la top­ique spec­trale d’après un prisme tech­nologique, en explo­rant ses liens avec la nos­tal­gie, au sein d’une époque han­tée par la cat­a­stro­phe. Après avoir souligné les con­ti­nu­ités avec le réc­it fan­tas­tique dans le traite­ment du motif de la spec­tral­ité, nous ver­rons com­ment l’artefact tech­nologique mod­i­fie les modal­ités d’une ren­con­tre des per­son­nages avec un passé fan­tas­mé et arti­fi­cielle­ment recréé. Incar­née dans une per­son­ne ou déployée dans un espace arti­fi­ciel, l’image du passé, impos­si­ble à attein­dre, revêt des sig­ni­fi­ca­tions ambiva­lentes au sein des réc­its étudiés. L’article analyse les ambiguïtés du traite­ment lit­téraire de ces man­i­fes­ta­tions spec­trales, dont le charme qu’elles exer­cent sur les per­son­nages n’exclut pas un péril. Il inter­roge égale­ment la réso­nance con­tem­po­raine de cette spécu­la­tion science-fictionnelle.

« The past in the future : spec­tral vari­a­tions in Adol­fo Bioy Casares’ The Inven­tion of Morel and Ray Brad­bury’s Mar­t­ian Chron­i­cles »
Con­sid­ered lit­er­ary mon­u­ments of the sci­ence fic­tion genre, The Inven­tion of Morel (1940) and The Mar­t­ian Chron­i­cles(1950) update the top­i­cal fig­ure of the ghost through ate­ch­no­log­i­cal prism, explor­ing its links with nos­tal­gia in a time haunt­ed by cat­a­stro­phe. After under­lin­ing the con­ti­nu­ities of the treat­ment of the ghost fig­ure with past fan­ta­sy nar­ra­tives, we will see how the tech­no­log­i­cal arti­fact mod­i­fies the modal­i­ties of the char­ac­ters’ encounter with a fan­ta­sized, arti­fi­cial­ly recre­at­ed past. Whether it is embod­ied in a per­son or deployed in an arti­fi­cial space, the unat­tain­able image of the past takes on ambiva­lent mean­ings in the nar­ra­tives stud­ied. The arti­cle ana­lyzes the ambi­gu­i­ties of the lit­er­ary treat­ment of these spec­tral man­i­fes­ta­tions, as they both crit­i­cize their inher­ent per­il and high­light their charm­ing poten­tial. It also ques­tions the rel­e­vance of sci­ence-fic­tion­al spec­u­la­tion for con­tem­po­rary readers.
